II. Workshop Description
Chinese believe dragons bring good luck to people. The appearance of a dragon is both frightening and bold but it has a benevolent disposition, and so eventually became an emblem to represent imperial authority. Dragon dance (舞龍) is very popular in all Chinese communities. It is most often seen in festive celebrations and is performed in a variety of costumes such as the golden dragon (金龍), the fire dragon(火龍) and luminous dragon(夜光龍) according to the focus of the occasion and the performance styles. For dragon dance performed by a team of 10 members, the dragon is about 18 meters long, 0.3 meters wide and in 9 sections. One member operates the dragon ball (weighs about 4 kg) to lead the dragon while the other 9 members hold the main body of the dragon on poles and performs as if they are one active dragon: they mimic the symbolic movements of the dragon demonstrating power and dignity in a sinuous, undulating manner.

The Workshop is designed to enable beginners to learn the fundamental skills in Dragon dance and to explore the Chinese traditional culture. Emphasis will be placed on team coordination as well as providing opportunities for participants to perform a short sequence of dragon dance for fun and joy.

Both males and females are welcome.
Participants should wear sports attire and non-marking sports shoes.
Participants will be invited to perform at the HKUST 20th Anniversary Celebration Party scheduled for 25 November 2011 at the Atrium.
The performers will receive uniform t-shirt and kung-fu trousers which they can keep after the performance.
