I work at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), where I am the Director of English Language courses at the College of LifeLong Learning, and I concurrently develop and teach ESL courses for the HKUST Language Centre.

Tools and Resources for language learning:
  1. Check My Words: enables English language learners to check vocabulary and grammatical patterns in their writing - includes access to Word Neighbors, an online concordancing program and a 2000-page English Grammar Guide. Register to download here.

  2. My Words: vocabulary acquisition and testing for language learners; includes a browser toolbar, competitive games and other features to maintain student interest. This site also assists teachers to monitor and assess students' vocabulary acquisition. Register here.

  3. Mark My Words: helps teachers respond to written assignments by linking comments to online resources and to encourage students to revise their own work; includes an Assignment Management System to allow students and instructors to exchange and manage assignments. Register to download here.

  4. Gong: synchronous and asynchronous voice communication and text indexing: promotes listening/speaking fluency. Download here.

  5. Language Learning Management System: An LMS for second language learning; students practise receptive and productive language skills autonomously and learn to use tools and resources for independent, life-long learning; teachers can create a variety of interactive tasks and track students' progress.   6. WordPilot: stand-alone and LAN concordancing program (vocabulary acquisition/writing tool) released in 1996. Here is an independent review.

  7. AutoLANG: LAN program addressing common errors in the English grammar and lexis of Chinese speakers (released in 1995 and largely superseded by the LMS mentioned above).

Research: the analysis of the interlanguage of Chinese speaking learners of English and studying the habits of effective language learners.

Development: language learning technology that models and optimizes the practice of effective learners.

Education: PhD (Lancaster University, UK): a distributional and computational analysis of the written English of speakers of Chinese. Access this and some other publications here.
