Assignment One - Understanding MARC record
Marks: 15 % of total assessment
Due: 1 May 2002
Select a library catalog (can be a school library catalog, a university library catalog or a union catalog) on the Web. Perform a search and retrieve a bibliographic record. Print the record in MARC worksheet format [1]. On a separate sheet of paper, write down the MARC tag(s) and its (their) content for the following fields in the record [2]:
Export the record in ISO 2709 format and save it to a file on a floppy disk [3]. If you have access to a local library system, attempt to load this record into it. Explain the process you have taken to load this record [4]. Explain why it is important for a library system to adopt MARC standard [5].
You need to submit the following:
Text must be typed or printed (by word processor). Write your name on all sheets of paper and on the label of the floppy disk.
Assignment Two
Marks: 35 % of the total assessment
Due: 1 June 2002
Select one of the following topics:
For Topic 1 and 2, the paper should be between 2000 to 4000 words. For Topic 3, the web page should contain at least 50 Internet resources together with a written paper of about 500 words.
Text must be typed or printed (by word processor). Write your name on all sheets of paper and on the label of the floppy disk or CD-ROM (if any). Only floppy disk and CD-ROM disc are accepted. Do not submit your assignment in other disk media (e.g. ZIP).
