Teaching Courses

CHEM 1001 Introductory Chemistry    [3-0-0:3]
[Previous Course Code: CHEM 001] For students with limited background in chemistry. Covers basic chemical concepts and historical development of chemistry; connections of chemistry with modern technology; its importance in economy, the environment and daily life. Exclusion(s): AL/AS Chemistry

CHEM 2112 Fundamentals of Organic Chemistry    [3-0-0:3]    [CHEM 2112 Web Site on LMES]
[Previous Course Code: CHEM 101] Various classes of organic compounds, emphasizing organic chemical reactions and mechanisms and their importance in the area of biological chemistry. For non-Chemistry students who prefer to cover organic chemistry in a single semester: a concise combination of the topics of CHEM 2118 and CHEM 3120. Prerequisite(s): AL/AS Chemistry

CHEM 2118 Organic Chemistry I    [3-1-0:4]
[Previous Course Code: CHEM 111] Structure and bonding; regio-, geometric, and stereoisomerism; polar and radical reactions of alkenes and alkynes; substitution and elimination reactions; and synthesis and reactions of alcohols and epoxides. Exclusion: CHEM 2112; Prerequisite: AL Chemistry

CHEM 3120 Organic Chemistry II    [3-0-0:3]
[Previous Course Code: CHEM 212] Continuation of CHEM 2118. Introduction to IR, MS, and NMR spectroscopy; dienes, resonance and aromaticity; electrophilic aromatic substitution and nucleophilic aromatic substitution; benzylic and allylic reactivity; the chemistry of carbonyl compounds and carboxylic acid derivatives; the chemistry of amines; pericyclic reactions. Prerequisite: CHEM 2118

CHEM 3130 Intermediate Organic Chemistry    [3-0-0:3]
[Previous Course Code: CHEM 313] Provides further training in the multistep organic synthesis of natural and unnatural products with focus on the retrosynthetic analysis, carbonyl group chemistry, and pericyclic reactions with a brief coverage on new synthetic methodologies for efficient synthesis of compound libraries [to be approved]. A prerequisite for students wishing to take CHEM 5110/5120 as part of their undergraduate program. Prerequisite: CHEM 3120

CHEM 5110 Advanced Organic Chemistry I    [3-0-0:3]
Previous Course Code: CHEM 511] Mechanism and theory in organic chemistry, molecular orbital theory, structure-activity relationships, isotope effects, solvent effects, neighboring group participation, and reactive intermediate. Background: CHEM 2118, CHEM 3120 and CHEM 3130

CHEM 5120 Advanced Organic Chemistry II    [3-0-0:3]
[Previous Course Code: CHEM 512] Stereochemistry and conformational analysis; reactions of various classes of organic compounds; synthetic organic chemistry; modern methods of synthesis including both specific methodology and multi-step complex synthesis. Prerequisite: CHEM 5110 Advanced Organic Chemistry I
